About Dalby, QLD
The administration centre for the Western Downs Region, Dalby is one of the larger towns of the Darling Downs region in western Queensland. Being the juncture of three main highways, the Warrego, Moonie and Bunya highways, the town is in the vicinity of 208 km from Brisbane and 82km from Toowoomba. It is part of the Western Downs Region local government area, in the state electorate of Warrego and federal division of Maranoa.
The Darling Downs area is renowned for agriculture and farming, with Dalby known as the centre for grain and cotton cropping. Having a history back to 1840, when it was known as ‘The Crossing’, Dalby was the crossing of Myall Creek, a tributary of the Condamine River.
From 1853 to 1859, the town was part of the State of New South Wales, however became part of Queensland following 1859, with recognition formally received in 1863. The Post Office started operating in 1854.
The current population of Dalby is 12,719, as at the 2016 census, with local industry including large scale engineering, coal mining and the production of fuel through milling grain into ethanol. The area has two public primary schools, a public high school and two private colleges. A new shopping centre recently opened on Cunningham Street.
