About Bowen, QLD

Bowen is a large town in the coastal region of North Queensland, on the main arterial highway, the Bruce Highway, which runs along the eastern coast. Bowen is halfway between regional centres of Mackay and Townsville; and forms part of the famous Whitsunday region. The town is in the local government area of the Whitsunday Region, the state electorate of Burdekin and the federal division of Dawson. Captain James Cook sailed past Bowen in 1770, naming the cape he saw ‘Cape Gloucester’. This cape turned out to be an island just off Bowen’s coast. The bay between this island and the mainland was explored in 1859 and the town settled in 1861 and was name Bowen in 1865.
